Google will speed up the internet

Google will speed up the internetGoogle hopes its two new technologies will speed up the internet. One of the these new technologies is a major update to its search engine that adds real-time results to search pages, pushing Google further ahead in the race to deliver the most up-to-date information.

Google now immediately indexes articles and photos from services such as Facebook, Twitter and FriendFeed presenting the results in a constantly updating marquee. The search giant said it will apply its ranking algorithm to real-time results as it does ordinary results.

The second change is DNS (Public Domain Name System) rolled out by Google. The service in an attempt to solve a different but equally important speed issue. DNS converts the web addresses we use, such as www.google.com into the IP addresses that computers use.

Generally, internet service providers have their own DNS servers, but web pages usually require multiple DNS lookups and the servers are often slow. The result can be a slow browsing experience because you're waiting for them to tell your computer which IP address to connect to. Google says its Public DNS will be quicker and more secure, preventing you from being a victim of DNS spoofing, which can send users to malicious websites loaded with malware.

If you have a router on your network, you only need to configure some settings. To use Google Public DNS, you just need to point your DNS servers to 8.8,8,8 and 8.8.4.4. If you don't, you'll need to configure each PC individually.
